MANKATO — At least as far as retail and service sales are concerned, a combined Mankato and North Mankato has joined Rochester, St. Cloud and Duluth to become among the largest trade centers in Greater Minnesota. A report released Saturday by the University of Minnesota shows Mankato had $904 million in taxable retail and service sales in 2009. That’s about a tenth less than the...
7 Principles of the Modern Meeting Standard

5 Guiding Questions for Planning and...
via dolectures.com I watched Alan Webber’s Do Lecture during my lunch time today and felt inspired to write some stuff down (a.k.a. - I took some notes). I think these are great guiding questions for planning and decision-making: 1. What business are you really in? 2. Can you capture the world’s imagination? 3. Have you raised the cost of status quo? 4. Are you thinking big by...

Adding caffeine to sunscreen could guard against...
Scientists have worked out how caffeine might protect against certain skin cancers – a finding that could lead to better sunscreens. The research, conducted in mice, suggests that caffeine changes the activity of a gene involved in the destruction of cells that have DNA damage and are therefore more likely to become cancerous. The scientists said this may lead to new ways of preventing...

49 Uses for Tea
By Steve Graham, Hometalk I get through the sleepless days of being a stay-at-home dad, freelance writer and DIY remodeler with copious quantities of tea. I drink Celestial Seasonings Morning Thunder tea in a big beer stein, which I believe to be quite manly. I also hate to throw out anything I could reuse or recycle. So I scoured the Internet to find 50 uses for used tea bags and tea,...

Design what success looks like before you start. Be...

When what was a luxury becomes the standard.

Why schools should try things not "research-based"...
The concept is simple: Schools should focus 20-to-30 percent of their resources on true innovation and “next practices.” Next practices aren’t necessarily about being better; they’re about being different. Teachers should be encouraged and empowered to experiment and try new things. Then, when some of these ideas become accepted best practices, schools should already be working toward a new set...

via guardian.co.uk Wordles are great for analyzing information. They work well for seeing messages in documents and speeches. They become even more powerful when you use them to compare, analyze, and evaluate multiple documents, as demonstrated by the Guardian today in their piece about Obama’s second State of the Union Address. A very cool tool.
